Probabilistic Assessment of Cereal Rye Cover Crop Impacts on Regional Crop Yield and Soil Carbon

Field research for exploring the impact of winter cover crops (WCCs) integration into cropping systems is resource intensive, time-consuming and offers limited application beyond study area. To bridge this gap, we used APSIM model, to simulate corn (Zea mays L.)-rye (Secale cereale L.)-corn-rye corn-rye-soybean (Glycine max rotations in comparison with corn-corn corn-soybean across state Illinois at a spatial resolution 5 km × from 2000 2020 WCCs on soil organic carbon (SOC) dynamics crop production. By propagating uncertainty model simulations associated initial conditions, weather, soil, management practices, estimated probability expected value change yield SOC following WCC integration. Our results suggest that integrating cereal rye imparted greater stability state. It was found areas low increase (p < 0.75) responded equally well sequestration through long term adoption WCCs. This presents most complete accounting benefits broad region provides insights spatiotemporal variability increasing rate.
